Snow dyeing – How to

I thought maybe some of you may have questions about how to snow dye.

There are a couple of things you need. First, you need snow! I use MX fiber reactive dyes on 100% cotton fabric. And there is soda ash which you need to get the dye to bond to the fabric.

I fold my fabric, soak it in soda ash and then put it in a pan with drainage holes. This pan goes in another pan without holes to contain the melted snow. On top of the fabric, I layer a couple inches of snow. And then I put the dye on top of the snow.

Then comes the hardest part. You have to wait for the snow to melt. I have mine in my basement, and it usually will melt overnight, but sometimes takes longer.
